While I was in New York this winter I bumped into this Japanese bookstore called Book Off. It had second hand books and cd’s, and a large collection of manga comics upstairs. So I snooped around there browsing some comics, to find out lots of them were only one buck. Wow. And they all looked brand new. I never read these comics before, but that seemed like a good deal to me. So even though I can’t read Japanese I managed to find ones with some really nice inspiring artwork. The titles I looked up by their ISBN numbers, theyre titled Biomega, Mushishi and Rainbow.
Biomega is a story about a cool bike riding, gun wielding hero who seems to team up with a talking bear that protects some girl with healing powers. Under attack from hordes of mutated super ugly humans the hero blasts away and blood splatters all over the place. Yay!
Mushishi is still quite a mystery to me. In part 4 it involves the story of two sisters, little cocoons containing messages, and a little creepy furball. It’s slower paced and more focused on the story, but the peacefulness of the scenery and the occasional water colored pages make up for it.
Then there is Rainbow part 11, the story of a soldier who gets stuck in a village in the middle of real bad weather. The severe wind and rain are very dramatically depicted, and the flashbacks of our hero’s past keep the story interesting.
Well there you have it! Even with limited understanding of the storyline this was still some really inspiring artwork for just 3 bucks.
